Dark Souls 3 Blue Sentinels or Blade of the Darkmoon

PREPARE TO DIE LESS

Your journey through Lothric doesn't end here. Be sure to check out the rest of Polygon's Dark Souls 3 guide , which offers everything from tips for beginners and returning masochists to detailed walkthroughs of every area — including all of the secret, bonus content.

Covenants return in Dark Souls 3 more focused and streamlined than in previous installments. You may pledge your allegiance to any of eight, and each comes with its own optional tasks. Most offer a reward at each of two threshold goals.

Instead of passively increasing the difficulty of the game like Dark Souls 2's Company of Champions or locking you out of story content like the original's Darkwraiths, Dark Souls 3's covenants simply give an extra wrinkle to the player-versus-player world. And with one exception, you will be able to freely switch between all of them.

This guide will teach you about the purpose behind and how to join each covenant, as well as the requirements to obtain each of their rewards rewards.

Blade of the Darkmoon

How to join a covenant

To join a covenant, you first need to find that covenant's item. We'll show you where to find each in the sections below.

After you have the item, open your Equipment menu, and place the covenant item in Covenant slot on the left. It's the one surrounded by the diamond-shaped box. That's it. You're now a member in good standing.

Way of Blue

About the covenant

This first covenant is geared towards newer players. If members of the Way of Blue are invaded by a hostile player — known as red phantoms — a member from the Blue Sentinels or Blade of the Darkmoon covenants may automatically summon into the world to help defeat the dark spirit. Because this is a covenant for players seeking help from others, it does not offer any rewards.

How to join the covenant

Across from the High Wall of Lothric's critical boss, Vordt of the Boreal Valley, at the top of a set of stairs, you will find a towering sanctuary with blue glass windows. Two knights patrol the exterior of the building, but inside, you will find a friendly woman, Emma.

To move on to the Undead Settlement, you must speak with her and obtain the Small Lothric Banner. After you've received it, talk to her once more to also receive the Way of Blue insignia.

Warrior of Sunlight

About the covenant

The altruistic members of the covenant use the White Sign Soapstone to offer up their services to players in need. You can purchase the White Soapstone from the Shrine Handmaid at Firelink for 500 souls. When summoned into another player's world, Warriors of Sunlight must help complete an area or defeat a critical boss to earn a Sunlight Medal. Your best bet for being summoned is to plop your symbol down in front of a quick boss fight with no instant kill attacks or next to a bonfire if you'd like to spend more time fighting. Members aren't barred from invading other players, either. Using a Red Eye Orb to enter another player's world and killing them will also get you a Sunlight Medal.

You won't be able to access the altar to exchange your medals until late in the game. You can find it right outside of the Dragonslayer Armour boss gate in Lothric Castle. Head to the right side of the stone building across from the boss area, and climb up the ladder. Mind the archers and head across the rooftops to the other building. Slide down the ladder here, and head across the bridge. In this room, you'll find the sun-kissed altar for Warriors of Sunlight.

Exchange 10 Sunlight Medals at the altar for the, Sacred Oath miracle. Offer 30 medals, and you'll receive the Great Lightning Spear miracle.

How to join the covenant

From the Undead Settlement bonfire, head through the building, toward a burning tree surrounded by enemies. Run down the path to the left of the fire, and you will come upon a house. Open the door and find a hole in the floor to the right. Fall through it, and you will find Estus Soup and the Warrior of Sunlight insignia.

Mound-Makers

About the covenant

Mound-Makers are the wildcard covenant. Regardless of if they use a Red Eye Orb or White Soapstone, they will appear as a purple phantom. When using the White Soapstone, they can attack the world's enemies, but their main goal is to kill the host. They can also kill any sort of phantom in the world.

Upon defeating the host or killing a number of non-host phantoms, the covenant member will receive Vertebra Shackles to exchange at the altar. Exchange 10 for the Bloodlust katana. Exchange 30 for the Warmth pyromancy.

How to join the covenant

How you join the Mound-Makers depends on whether you've defeated the Curse-rotted Greatwood. But before we move on, be wary: Obtaining the insignia for Rosaria's Fingers will prohibit you from pursuing a quest line essential to joining the Mound-Makers.

If you haven't defeated the Curse-rotted Greatwood

Start at the Undead Settlement bonfire and move forward through the first building until you come upon the burning tree. Take a right across the wooden bridge toward the horse stables. Instead of going inside, smash the wooden crates to the right and walk along the path on the outer perimeter. Stay alert for small enemies hiding along the path, especially those strewn across the rooftops blowing darts at you.

At the end of the path, climb up the ladder ahead of you, and drop off of the rooftop to the right. Here you will find what appears to be an enemy with a serrated saw blade, but he will not attack. Examine the cage on his back, and you will find yourself beneath the boss arena for the Cursed-rotted Greatwood. Speak to the knight here to receive the Mound-Makers insignia.

The covenant's altar, where you can exchange your Vertebra Shackles, is just behind him.

If you have defeated the Curse-rotted Greatwood

To join this covenant, you will need Sirris of the Sunless Realms' help.

After speaking to Anri of Astora and Horace at the Halfway Fortress bonfire on the Road of Sacrifices, Sirris will appear at the Firelink Shrine. Speak to her before heading back out. When you get to the Old Wolf of Farron bonfire in Farron Keep, run around the perimeter of the tower to its right side.

At the far corner, you will find an illusory wall hiding the Dreamchaser's Ashes. Head back to Firelink Shrine and give the ashes to the Shrine Handmaid. If you travel to another Bonfire and then return to Firelink, Sirris should appear. Speak with her.

Later, when you enter Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, you must defeat a lizard monster on a long stone bridge. After you rest at the Central Irithyll bonfire, head back across the bridge to find a summon sign for Sirris. You'll be taken to the Pit of Hollows to help her defeat Creighton the Wanderer.

Speak to Sirris at Firelink, afterwards, and you'll receive the Blessed Mail Breaker and the Silvercat Ring, which prevents damage from falling.

After you defeat Aldrich, Devourer of Gods in Anor Londo, head back to the boss gate for the Curse-rotted Greatwood arena. The quickest path there is from the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire in the Undead Settlement. There, you will find another Sirris summon symbol. Assist her in defeating Holy Knight Hodrick to finally gain access to the Mound-Makers.

Blue Sentinels

About the covenant

When someone invades a member of the Way of Blue covenant, a member of the Blue Sentinel is summoned automatically to assist them. If they manage to kill the dark spirit and the Way of Blue member makes it to the area boss battle, they'll receive Proof of a Concord Kept.

Anything pertaining to automatic summoning can be iffy because it's out of your control. Some players get handfuls of summons at a time. For others, it rarely happens.

How to join the covenant

You can exchange your Proof of a Concord Kept items with Company Captain Yorshka in Anor Londo. She's the leader of the Blade of the Darkmoon covenant, and the two covenants actually share rewards. You can exchange 10 Proof of a Concord Kept items for a Darkmoon Ring, which grants two additional Attunement slots. Exchange 30 for the Darkmoon Blade miracle. Check how to find Yorshka in the Blade of the Darkmoon section below.

At the second Bonfire on the Road of Sacrifices – the Halfway Fortress, to be exact – you will find two knights named Anri of Astora and Horace. Anri on the left is far more conversational, but it's the silent Horace to the right you'll want to chat up to receive the Blue Sentinel insignia.

Watchdogs of Farron

About the covenant

As if the swamps of Farron Keep weren't hellish enough, covenant members automatically invade the worlds of kindled players passing through the poisonous marshes. Again, anything involving automatic summoning can be a nebulous affair, especially when the folks heading into the swamp are likely lower-leveled than the covenant members. But if you manage to invade a player's world and defeat them, you will receive Wolf's Blood Swordgrass.

Offer 10 to the big dog to receive the Old Wolf Curved Sword. Offer 30 to get the Wolf Knight's Greatshield and Wolf Ring, which greatly increases poise.

How to join the covenant

Who wouldn't want to serve an old wolf? From the Keep Ruins bonfire on the Road of Sacrifices, head down the stone path toward the three-flame activated stone door. Notice the tower to your right.

Head toward it across two dry land masses where you will come upon a ladder up to the tower. Head inside to find a bonfire and the massive Old Wolf of Farron. Pray to the creature to receive the Watchdogs of Farron insignia.

Rosaria's Fingers

About the covenant

If you want to invade people's worlds and make their lives a living hell, then you'll feel right at home in this covenant. To obtain Pale Tongues, members must invade other worlds and kill the host. Simple as that. Killing Blue Sentinels or Blade of the Darkmoon members will result in a Forked Pale Tongue for double the points.

The real benefit of the covenant lies in re-specing your character. For one Pale Tongue, you can change your level distribution across abilities. You can do this up to five times in each playthrough. You can also change your appearance for the same price.

How to join the covenant

Note: Don't join this covenant until you've fulfilled the requirements to join the Mound-Makers and Blade of the Darkmoon. Sirris' quest line will be locked out if you do.

Once you've looped through the Cathedral of the Deep to open the shortcut to the Cleansing Chapel bonfire, head through the left door and jump on the lift in the first room to the left. Head out on to the exterior ledge of the building until you come upon a ladder. Climb up and jump out of the shattered corner of the room onto a roof. Scale it and head to the right. If you enter the first door on your left, you should come up the rafters above the giant. Mind the archers and move diagonally left across the rafters until the halfway point where you'll move diagonally right. Drop down on the ledge to the left, and drop down once again. Follow the path to the right until you enter the living quarters of Rosaria.

Speak to her to receive the Rosaria's Fingers insignia.

Trade in 10 Pale Tongues for an Obscuring Ring, which makes you harder to detect by enemies. Trade in 30 for Man-Grub's Staff, one of the few weapons that scales with the Luck attribute.

If you're looking for an area of frequent invasions, look no further than Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. Though the entire section is fairly active, the area just outside the Pontiff Sulyvahn boss fight offers many chances to invade poor souls.

Aldrich Faithful

About the covenant

One of the toughest covenants to join is the Aldrich Faithful in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. This is another covenant based on automatic summoning. If a kindled player enters the area, you may be summoned to kill them. But unlike the other covenants, this is far and away the most active spot for PvP matchmaking, so your chances of summoning should be significantly higher.

Upon defeating hosts, you will receive Human Dregs to offer to Archdeacon McDonnell. Turn in 10 for the Great Deep Soul Spell and 30 for the Archdeacon's Great Staff, a weapon for sorceries that scales extremely well with Faith.

How to join the covenant

From the Pontiff Sulyvahn bonfire, head past the courtyard full of sleeping giants into the stone building at the far end. That's easier said than done. Head to the far left through the underpass to take out the fireball-casting priests first. This'll give you space to take on the two warriors near the entrance of the stone building. Don't worry about the giants. There's enough here to keep you occupied.

Once inside, don't head upstairs. Instead, walk under the staircase to the left and knock out the illusory wall here. Slide down the ladder into the sewer below and defeat the two lizard monsters here. Again, easier said than done. If you can manage to summon someone and bring them this far without getting invaded, they will surely be helpful here.

Once the lizard monsters are out of commission, go to the far corner to pray at the rotting body of Archdeacon McDonnell to receive the Aldrich Faithful insignia.

Blade of the Darkmoon

About the covenant

This covenant is basically an alternate version of the Way of Blue. When members are in danger, you will be automatically summoned to protect them. The biggest difference is the extra souls you'll get for killing Aldrich Faithful members. The rewards are identical: 10 Proof of a Concord Kept for a Darkmoon Ring and 30 for the Darkmoon Blade miracle.

How to join the covenant

Remember Sirris' complicated quest line for joining the Mound-Makers? It's again required to join the Blade of the Darkmoon — but only about half of it. You must complete Sirris' quest up to the point of giving the Dreamchaser's Ashes to the Shrine Handmaid and speaking with Sirris to receive a gesture. You then must find Company Captain Yorshka in Anor Londo.

From the Anor Londo bonfire, jump on the rotating platform and lower it. Off to the left, you will see a solitary tower.

Find your inner Indiana Jones and walk straight forward off the top pathway. Don't worry: There's an invisible walkway below your feet. When you're next to the tower, take a right and fall in front of the bonfire here. To the left, you will find Yorshka and receive the Blade of the Darkmoon insignia.
